Open Cell Insulation Knoxville, TN

The foam that expands into everything the tape measure never found.

Open cell spray foam is the lighter of the two foams. It expands hard on application — many times its liquid volume — and cures soft and spongy, with the cells left open to one another. That expansion is the point. It reaches into the gaps around a top plate, behind a junction box and along a rafter line that no batt was ever going to fill. We install it throughout Knoxville and Knox County. Call (865) 503-5486 to talk about your project.

What Open Cell Does Well

Open cell is an air barrier first and an insulator second, and in a leaky house that ordering is exactly right. Most of what a Knoxville homeowner feels as a cold room is air movement, not conduction through the wall. Stop the movement and the room changes.

  • It fills deep cavities economically. In a 2x6 wall or between roof rafters there is room to work, and open cell gives you that volume for less per square foot than closed cell.
  • It dampens sound. The open cell structure absorbs airborne noise, which is why it gets specified in interior walls between bedrooms and around media rooms.
  • It stays flexible. The cured foam moves slightly with the building instead of cracking away from it as timber shrinks through its first few seasons.
  • It shows you leaks. Because it is vapour open, a roof leak above it will show through rather than sitting hidden behind a sealed layer.

Where We Would Not Use It

Open cell absorbs liquid water, so it does not belong anywhere that can get wet: not in a crawl space on the ground side, not on a below-grade wall, not sprayed onto bare metal that condenses. Those jobs get closed cell instead. It also needs depth to reach a useful R-value, so in a shallow 2x4 cavity it is usually the wrong economy.

We say this plainly because the material gets sold on price, and price is a bad reason to put a soft, vapour-open foam somewhere humid. The right question is never which foam is better. It is which foam suits this assembly, in this climate, in this part of the building.

Attics and Roof Decks in Knox County

The most common open cell job we do is the underside of a roof deck, converting a vented attic into a sealed one. The ductwork and the air handler, which were sitting in a space that hits well over a hundred degrees in July, end up inside the conditioned envelope. Homeowners notice that one. It pairs naturally with our attic insulation work, and we will tell you whether your attic is a candidate for sealing or better left vented with the floor insulated.

New Construction Framing

Open cell is at its most efficient when the walls are open and the trades have finished their rough-in. Insulating at that stage means we are spraying a clean cavity rather than working around finished surfaces, and the whole envelope gets done in one visit. Builders working in Knoxville and Maryville can talk to us about scheduling against an inspection date.

Get It Quoted Properly

Ask us to look at the building. We will tell you where open cell belongs, where it does not, and what thickness we would run. The estimate is written and free, and it states the material by name so you can hold it against anyone else's. Call (865) 503-5486 or use the contact page.

Questions

Open cell questions

Is open cell foam a downgrade?

No, it is a different tool. It is the better choice in deep cavities and interior sound walls, and the wrong choice anywhere liquid water can reach it.

Does open cell foam absorb water?

Yes, which is exactly why we do not put it in crawl spaces or against below-grade walls. In a roof assembly that same property means a leak shows itself instead of hiding.

Will open cell help with noise between rooms?

It dampens airborne sound noticeably, which is why interior partition walls are a common use for it in new construction.

How much does it expand?

A great deal — it is trimmed back flush after it cures wherever drywall has to go over it. That trimming is part of the job, not an extra.

Framing open and ready to insulate?

Tell us the stage the build is at and we will fit the spray around your inspection date.
